Aggies pick up win, top Missouri Southern

MATCH BOXSCORE >>

LAWTON, OK (Sept. 11) - Cameron overcame a difficult serving and receiving effort Saturday in the final day of action at the Coca-Cola Classic. Coach Kim Vinson's squad notched its second win of the season with a straight-set victory over Missouri Southern State University, improving to 2-8 on the season.

Cameron returns to action at home Tuesday, hosting Dallas Baptist in a match scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., at Aggie Gym.

A trio of critical comebacks triggered Cameron's 30-26, 30-26, 30-26 win over the Lions Saturday. The Aggies trailed late in each of the three sets before storming back to win each frame.

Morgan Meyer brought the Aggies back from down 15-22 and 21-24 in the opening frame with several key kills. The Aggies also trailed 16-18 and 22-23 in Game 2 before a block by Nicole Reinhart and Tayler Turner gave Cameron the late lead.

In the third set, it was Taran Turner getting a pair of unassisted kills and teaming with Meyer on a block at the net to spark a 10-1 run that helped Cameron overcome a 14-19 deficit.

Meyer and Taran Turner each finished with 11 kills to lead the Aggies. Three Cameron players recorded double-digit digs, led by Jenny Head's 15. Sophomore setter Vicki Ibarra had 34 assists.

Missouri Southern's Jackie Gallagher led all players with 16 kills and 15 digs.

Cameron out-blocked Missouri Southern 6-5 at the net and produced a .299 attack percentage - the highest of the season for the Aggies - while limiting the Lions to an .088 attack mark. But MSSU recorded 13 service aces in the match, while the Aggies committed 10 service errors to keep the match close much of the way.

In Saturday's final contest to wrap up action in the 2004 Coca-Cola Classic, Central Oklahoma dispatched 22nd-ranked West Texas A&M in straight sets to improve to 7-4 on the season.
