Aggies claim three individual LSC titles

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Oct. 9) - The Cameron University men's tennis team came away with three individual conference titles this week, capping a strong showing at the Lone Star Conference Individual Tennis Championships on the campus of Midwestern State University.

Senior Alex Furlan and junior Rafael Zurita won the men's #4 and #5 singles flights, respectively, while Zurita teamed with senior Ocar Guerra to win the #1 doubles crown.

Zurita and Guerra blasted their way through the top doubles flight, winning each of their three matches in straight sets. The duo knocked out East Central's Pablo Romera and Jack Odengren, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals before eliminating top-seeded Rohan Williams and Jared King of Midwestern State in the semis by a 6-3, 6-4, count.

In the championship match, Zurita and Guerra posted a convincing 6-3, 6-1, win over Central Oklahoma's Christian Haugen and Tomas Hladil to claim the conference title.

In the No. 5 singles draw, Zurita needed just one extra set in claiming the conference title. The Madrid native advanced to the flight semifinals with an opening-round bye and quickly got on top of Odegren with a 6-3 win in the opening set of their semifinal meeting. Odegren rallied to even the match with a 6-2 win in the second set, but Zurita advanced to the title match by winning the third set, 6-4.

Against Abilene Christian's Evan Puglia in the event finals, Zurita wasted little time. A two-time NJCAA All-American at Laredo (Texas) Community College, Zurita posted a 6-3, 6-3 win to take the title.

Furlan, a senior from Motta Di Livenza, Italy, had a similar run through the men's No. 4 singles flight. The Aggie veteran advanced to the finals with a 6-3, 6-3 win over ECU's Shane Conroy and rallied from a set down to win the draw with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision over ACU's George Carstens.

The Lone Star Conference Individual Championships marked the end of fall competition for the Cameron tennis teams. Coach James Helvey's squads are scheduled to resume competition in February. For complete LSC championship results, visit www.lonestarconference.org.
