King's 66 leads Aggies to victory at Rattler Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Oct. 19) - Owen Mahaffey's birdie on the final hole clinched it, but a sizzling six-under round of 66 by Ryan King made it possible, as the Cameron men's golf team notched another tournament victory on Tuesday.

King carded the low round of the tournament and finished with a three-round total of 208 (-8) to land in third place individually at the Rattler Invitational hosted by St. Mary's University at the Golf Club of Texas. The Duncanville, Texas, senior was one of only three players in the field to post at least two rounds in the 60s, leading Coach Jerry Hrnciar's Aggies to a narrow one-stroke victory over Texas Wesleyan in the team competition.

King's effort almost went for naught, as the Aggies needed a late run by Mahaffey to pick up the team victory. The Wichita Falls, Texas, sophomore birdied the final two holes playing in the last group of the day to put Cameron on top.

"We were coming up to the last hole and I told Owen, 'I think we need a birdie here'," Hrnciar said. "He just looked at me and said, 'OK Coach, I'll get it.'"

After finding the fairway with his tee shot on No. 18, Mahaffey stuck his approach shot to within four feet of the cup, tapping in for the easy birdie to give Cameron the win.

King and Mahaffey were two of three Cameron golfers to finish among the individual Top 10 in the event. Mahaffey was among a group of three tied for fifth with a score of 211 (-5), while Brad Aycock posted a one-under 71 in Tuesday's final round to land in a tie for ninth at even par for the tournament.

Junior Travis Lovins and senior Kolby Seals shot 72 and 77, respectively, on Tuesday and finished just out of the Top 20 in a tie for 22nd.

First-day individual leader Blake Slaughter of St. Edward's University fired a final-round 68 to earn medalist honors in the event by three strokes over Texas Wesleyan's Scott Sikes.

Cameron, ranked in the NCAA Division II Top 20 in both the GolfStat computer rankings and the latest Golf Coaches Association of America poll, will wrap up fall competition this weekend. The Aggies are one of only two Division II teams scheduled to participate in this weekend's Shangri-La Shootout, hosted by Oral Roberts University at the Shangri-La Resort Blue Course near Grand Lake.
