RICHARDSON, Texas (Nov. 15) - Just two days removed from its first appearance since 2000 in the Lone Star Conference championship match, the Cameron women's volleyball team is beginning to receive recognition for its effort.
The LSC North Division champion Aggies had two first-team all-conference selections and claimed three of four individual awards Monday, when league officials announced the annual LSC volleyball postseason awards. Senior outside hitter Morgan Meyer was named the Player of the Year in the LSC North, while senior Jenny Head took home Libero of the Year honors. Cameron head coach Kim Vinson was selected as the LSC North Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her career.
Cameron, which was the runner-up in last week's conference tournament, led all teams with six total honorees, getting two each on the first team, second team and honorable mention lists. Meyer and senior middle blocker Nicole Reinhart were named to the first team, while Head and sophomore setter Vicki Ibarra were second-team honorees. Sisters Taran and Tayler Turner received honorable mention.
A native of Alvin, Texas, Meyer led Cameron's offensive attack this season and was ranked among the LSC statistical leaders, finishing the season with an average of 4.07 kills per game. Meyer also led the Aggies in total attacks and attempts, while also recording a team-high 46 service aces. A two-time All-LSC North first team pick, Meyer finished her four-year career with the Aggies with more than 1,200 kills and 1,300 digs. She appeared in every game of every match over the last three seasons.
Head finished her two-year career at Cameron with four school records, including marks for single-season digs and career digs per game. The Grande Prairie, Alberta, native finished the 2004 regular season leading all conference players in digs per game. Last season, Head was awarded LSC North Defensive Player of the Year honors while also being named to the all-conference second team. She was one of seven players named to the all-tournament team at last week's LSC championships.
In her final year with the Aggies, Reinhart emerged as the most consistent Cameron player on the court. She ranked among the conference blocking leaders for the second straight year this season and led the Aggies with a .278 season hittinge percentage. A product of Rosalind, Albeta, Reinhart was a three-time LSC North Offensive Player of the Week winner this season, including back-to-back honors on Sept. 27 and Oct. 4. She was also named to this year's LSC championships all-tournament team.
Ibarra continued her record-setting pace for assists with the Aggies in her sophomore campaign. The San Antonio, Texas, native ranked among the conference leaders with 11.47 assists per game this season and remains well above the school record pace of 10.34 career assists per game set by former Cameron all-conference setter Megan Smith. In just two seasons with the Aggies, Ibarra has collected six LSC North Setter of the Week awards while racking up 2,760 assists.
Taran and Tayler Turner combined for nearly 4.9 kills and 1.5 blocks per game this season. Taran finished second on the team in total blocks and hitting percentage, while Tayler was third on the team in digs and second in kills per game.
Vinson, who has retired her coaching duties at Cameron, won a total of 269 matches in 15 seasons with the Aggies, including LSC North Division regular season titles in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2004. Under her direction, the Aggies claimed their only Lone Star Conference volleyball championship, beating defending national champion West Texas A&M in the 1998 conference finals. A former NAIA national Co-Coach of the Year at Hardin-Simmons University, Vinson will remain on the Cameron athletic staff, continuing her current duties as Assistant Athletic Director, NCAA Compliance Coordinator and Senior Woman's Administrator.
