Cooksey, Lady Aggies get first victory

LAWTON, Okla. (Nov. 27) - Brittany Cooksey scored eight of Cameron's first 12 points and finished with a game-high 19, leading the Lady Aggies to an 80-57 victory over Panhandle State in action Saturday at the annual PowerAde Classic at Aggie Gym.

The win improved Coach Dick Halterman's squad to 1-3, while dropping OPSU to 0-6. The Lady Aggies return to action late next week with a pair of Lone Star Conference crossover contests. Cameron will travel to Portales, N.M., to face Eastern New Mexico on Thursday, before stopping in Canyon, Texas, to take on West Texas A&M on Saturday.

Cooksey scored 15 of her season-high 19 points in the first half on Saturday as Cameron built and 18-point halftime lead. The Lady Aggies led by just three Brandi Lewis' three-pointer found the net for Panhandle State with 9:38 left in the opening period. But Cameron answered with an 18-3 run over the next six minutes, capped Chelsea Turner's jumper in the paint to make it 38-20.

Cameron led by as many as 22 in the second half, taking advantage of poor shooting by OPSU and 21 free throw attempts in the second half. The visiting Lady Aggies shot just 28.6 percent from the floor in the game, including 5-of-21 from three-point range. Cameron cleaned up much of the mess, owning a 53-33 rebounding advantage in the game. Senior Christina Buben pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and added 10 points. Joneatta Brown also posted a double-double for the Lady Aggies, picking up 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Panhandle State threatened a comeback late in the game, pulling to within 12 on a pair of free throws by Amanda Jones with 8:37 remaining in the game. But Buben answered with a bucket underneath, adding to Cameron's 38-20 advantage in points in the paint, to spark an 11-2 run that put the game out of reach.

With both teams in the double-bonus by the seven-minute mark, the waning minutes of the game turned into a free throw contest. The teams combined for 53 charity attempts in the game, including 40 in the second half.
