Shooting woes sink Lady Aggies at ENMU
BOXSCORE >>
PORTALES, N.M. (Dec. 2) – The Cameron women's basketball team shot just 30.8 percent from the field, including a 4-of-24 effort from three-point range, falling to 1-4 on the year with a 67-55 Lone Star Conference crossover loss to Eastern New Mexico.
Coach Dick Halterman's squad will look to rebound on Saturday, taking on 22nd-ranked West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas.
Sophomore Chelsea Turner scored 16 points for the Lady Aggies on 5-of-6 shooting and was the only Cameron player to shoot better than 36 percent in the game. Junior Katie Stoll connected on just 2-of-10 three-point attempts, but added three other field goals in the game to finish with 12 points. Junior Melissa Steen added eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds as Cameron held a 46-38 advantage on the glass.
Cameron's leading scorer, junior guard Brittany Cooksey, was held without a field goal in the game. Cooksey was 2-of-2 from the free throw line, but finished 0-9 from the field, including 0-6 from three-point range.
Three players reached double-figures for the Zias, led by Heather Brown's game-high 18 points.
Cameron quickly fell behind Thursday and never recovered against the Zias. Eastern New Mexico scored the first six points of the game and held the Lady Aggies without a field goal until the 13:23 mark of the first half while building an 11-1 lead.
CU cut the lead to seven on a bucket by Joneatta Brown and a free throw by her sister Linda. But the Zias once again posted a big run, this time an 11-2 surge that made it 22-6 midway through the opening period.
The Zias held on to that double-digit advantage for much of the contest. Cameron cut the lead to eight on a Turner layup with 1:46 left before halftime and Stoll converted a layup 19 seconds before intermission to make it 35-26.
But Eastern New Mexico added a quick bucket before the halftime buzzer and scored the first four points of the second half. Cameron rallied in the closing minutes of the game, using three-pointers by Taylor Campbell and Stoll to get back within single-digits with just over a minute to play. Turner then added a bucket with 49 seconds remaining to make it an eight-point game.
