Lady Aggies get past Midwestern State

BOXSCORE >>

LAWTON, Okla. (Dec. 11) - Aided by a dismal shooting effort by Midwestern State, the Cameron women's basketball team ended a three-game losing skid with a 56-50 Lone Star Conference crossover win over the Lady Indians at Aggie Gym.

Coach Dick Halterman's squad limited the Lady Indians to a 21.4 percent shooting effort, improving to 2-6 on the year. MSU fell to 4-5.

Junior guard Brittany Cooksey paced the Lady Aggies' scoring effort Saturday, posting a game-high 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Senior Christina Buben recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while junior Melissa Steen contributed six points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Junior LaTia Banks was the only MSU player in double figures with 12 points. Junior Katherine Maples led the Lady Indians with 10 rebounds.

Cameron jumped out to the early lead Saturday, using a jumper by Cooksey at the 14:17 mark in the first half to make it 11-2. Midwestern answered with back-to-back buckets to make it a five-point game. But the Lady Indians converted only three more field goal attempts the rest of the half, finishing the opening period a woeful 6-of-37 (.162) from the floor.

The Lady Aggies increased their lead to 15 with just over five mintues to play in the game on a pair of free throws by Taylor Campbell that made it 44-29. The teams traded scoring runs from there until the final minute of the game.

Banks' conventional three-point play with 1:08 remaining sparked an 11-1 run by the Lady Indians that pulled them to within three at 53-50 with 14 seconds to play. But Buben and Steen combined to hit three of four charity attempts in the final seconds to hold off the late charge.

Next up for the Lady Aggies is a Dec. 21 date with third-ranked Emporia State. The Lady Hornets posted a 113-39 victory over Missouri Valley on Friday to move to 8-0 on the season.
