Lady Aggies collect fourth straight win

COMMERCE, Texas (Jan. 8) - Melissa Steen posted her second double-double of the season and Christina Buben produced a team-high 16 points, leading the Cameron women's basketball team to its fourth straight win Saturday against Texas A&M-Commerce.

Coach Dick Halterman's Lady Aggies improved to 6-7 on the year, dispatching the Lions, 74-64. Texas A&M-Commerce fell to 6-7.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Lady Aggies in the game. In addition to Buben, Katie Stoll added 14 points and Brittany Cooksey chipped in 11. Steen finished with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Cameron led virtually the entire contest, jumping out to a quick 16-4 advantage in the first seven minutes of the game. The Lady Aggies led by as many as 13 in the opening period before settling for a 34-25 advantage at intermission. Cameron shot nearly 43 percent from the field in the first half, including a 4-of-9 effort from three-point range, while the Lady Aggie defense limited Texas A&M-Commerce to a 30.8 shooting percentage in the first half.

The Lions rallied in the second period, opening the half with an 18-5 run. Hazel Woods' jumper at the 15:03 mark capped the A&M-C comeback and knotted the score at 39-39 and two more Lion buckets gave the home team a four-point lead with just under 14 minutes to play.

Texas A&M-Commerce still led 47-46 near the midway point of the second half before the Lady Aggies took over. A 17-2 surge that included back-to-back three-pointers by Steen and Stoll put Cameron ahead for good. The Lady Aggies hit 5-of-7 field goal attempts while limiting A&M-C to just 1-of-7 shooting during the stretch. Cameron also capitalized on Lion turnovers and free throw attempts to build a 63-49 lead with 5:54 to play.

The Lions pulled to within four on LaKesha Turner's three-pointer in the final minute of the game, but Cameron continued to use the charity stripe to its advantage, converting 7-of-10 free throws over the final 1:09 to lock up the win. Halterman's squad finished the game above 70 percent from the line for the fifth straigh game, outscoring Texas A&M-Commerce 24-8 at the line.

Cameron will wrap up Lone Star Conference crossover play at home next week, hosting Abilene Christian and Angelo State.
