Lady Aggies top Southeastern

GAME BOXSCORE >>

LAWTON, Okla. (Jan. 22) - Cameron's women's basketball team shot over 40 percent from the field for the first time in four games on Saturday afternoon and it paid off.

The Lady Aggies (7-10, 1-1 LSC North) made shots when when they need them and owned an 18-2 scoring advantage at the free throw line, turning back Southeastern Oklahoma 72-63 in Lone Star Conference North Division play.

Brittany Cooksey led all scorers in the game with 28 points. The junior guard connected on 9-of-17 shots from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Cooksey also posted a game-high four steals and added seven rebounds. Katie Stoll scored 12 points for the Lady Aggies, while Taylor Campbell added 10. Christina Buben collected a game-high 10 rebounds to go with eight points.

Southeastern got 14 points apiece form Brittni Burks and Mindy Foster.

Cameron led by five, 32-27, at intermission and never trailed in the second half against the Lady Savages, who entered the game ranked last in the Lone Star Conference in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. The Lady Aggies converted four fewer field goals than SOSU in the second half, but outscored their opponent 12-1 at the free throw line over the final 20 minutes.

Coach Dick Halterman's squad led by as many as 16 points on two occasions in the second half. Taylor Campbell put CU up 56-40 with a pair of free throws at the 10:59 mark and Merrisa Martinuzzi answered a Southeastern bucket less than a minute later to make it 58-42.

Southeastern made a late run, closing the gap to just five on a Mindy Foster layup with just over two minutes to play. But the Lady Savages missed three of four field goal attempts, as well as a pair of free throws, the rest of the way. Cameron, meanwhile, tacked on four straight free throws and a Chelsea Turner layup in the final minute to secure the win.
