Lady Aggies win second straight, top ECU
GAME BOXSCORE»
LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 10) - Cameron's women's basketball team overcame 22 turnovers and an 18-of-34 effort from the free throw line Thursday, winning for the second straight time in Lone Star Conference play with a 58-50 victory over East Central.
Coach Dick Halterman's Lady Aggies improved to 10-12 overall and 4-3 in Lone Star Conference North Division play, topping East Central, 58-50.
Senior Christina Buben scored 12 to share team-high scoring honors with Brittany Cooksey and led all players in the contest with nine rebounds. Katie Stoll added 11 for the Lady Aggies, hitting 3-of-6 from three-point range. East Central's Lacey Goldwire led all players with 13 points.
Cameron posted a 43-37 rebounding edge over the Lady Tigers and outscored ECU 18-10 from the charity stripe.
East Central held a 24-16 scoring advantage in the paint and led 21-8 in points off turnovers. But the Lady Aggie starters outscored ECU's first five, none of which reached double digits, 43-28.
After spotting the Lady Tigers an early 5-4 advantage, Cameron led the rest of the contest. The Lady Aggies limited ECU to a 19.4 percent shooting effort in the first half, including a 2-of-17 effort from behind the arc, while building a 27-18 halftime advantage.
The Cameron lead grew to 12 when Cooksey opened the second half with a three-pointer to make it 30-18, but East Central kept it close, in part, due to poor free throw shooting by the Lady Aggies. Cameron made just seven of its first 15 charity attempts in the second half and led by just six at 51-45, after ECU's Tenecia Miller hit one of two free throws with 1:18 remaining in the game.
But the Lady Aggies knocked down the free tosses when they needed them most. Cameron converted 7-of-8 free throws, including a 6-of-6 effort by Cooksey, over the final 1:12 to seal the win and keep the Lady Aggies in contention for yet another Lone Star Conference postseason berth. The win moved Cameron into a tie for third place in the divisional standings with ECU.
Next up for Halterman's squad is a Saturday trip to Durant to face Southeastern Oklahoma. The Lady Savages lost their sixth straight conference game on Thursday, falling on the road to Southwestern Oklahoma, 73-59.
