LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 11) - Coach Todd Holland's Cameron baseball team got the 2005 season off on the right foot Friday, taking both games of a doubleheader over Baker University. The Aggies won by scores of 4-3 and 5-2.
Derrick Mihecoby led the Aggie offensive attack with three hits, while four Cameron pitchers combined to handcuff Wildcat hitters.
Cameron will look to complete the sweep over Baker in a Saturday doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon at Cameron's McCord Field.
The Aggies trailed early in each game before rallying for come-from-behind wins. Baker jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the opener and led 2-0 early in Game 2. But the Aggie bats came alive late in each game.
Baker pitcher Josh Guilliams carried a perfect game into the third inning of Friday's nightcap before getting tagged with five hits and four earned runs. Lawton freshman Clint Powell doubled to left-center to open the Aggie half of the third inning and scored on a Matt Castillo double later in the frame to put Cameron within one at 2-1.
The Aggies then added three runs on three hits in the fourth to chase Guilliams from the game. Mihecoby singled to open the inning and then stole second and third base before scoring on Cody Brooks' two-RBI single to right. Brooks later scored on a double-steal situation to make it 4-2 Aggies.
Cameron added an insurance run in the fifth, capitalizing on a pair of Baker throwing errors to forge the final score.
Ryan Bengert (1-0) got the mound win for the Aggies in the nightcap, allowing just three hits in four innings of work. Ryan Totte came on in the fifth and struck out five of the first six batters he faced to earn his first save of the year.
In Friday's opening contest, Baker posted a run in each of the first two innings to grab a 2-0 lead. Leon Davenport scored on Dan Carr's sacrifice fly in the first and Tommy Griffin belted the first pitch of the second inning over the left field wall.
But Cameron chipped away, using a Corey Stang RBI single in the third and an RBI single by Castillo in the fourth to make it 3-2. The Aggies took the lead in the fifth when Rodney DeLong followed a Mihecoby single with a two-run homer to left.
Newcomer L.J. Willis (1-0) picked up the mound victory for the Aggies in Game 1, scattering eight hits over five innings. Willis walked two and struck out five. Dustin Henry came on in relief in the sixth, striking out three and allowing just one hit to pick up the Aggies' first save of the season.
