Tennis men knock off top-ranked Tyler

ENNIS, Texas (Feb. 19) - Led by another strong performance from junior Rafael Zurita, the Cameron men's tennis team stormed to a trio of weekend victories in Texas.

Zurita won all six of his matches as Coach James Helvey's Aggies swept Dallas Baptist and knocked off a pair of nationally ranked junior college teams, including top-ranked Tyler Junior College, to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Senior Oscar Guerra also produced a perfect 6-0 record for the week, teaming with Zurita in doubles competition to win three matches while also going 3-0 in singles play.

Cameron defeated Collin County Community College, ranked sixth in the NJCAA team rankings, 8-1 on Friday, then blasted Dallas Baptist 9-0 before notching a 5-3 win over Tyler.

"That was the first time I've had a team beat Tyler," Helvey said following Saturday's action, which finished after midnight early Sunday morning. "This was a great weekend for our team and probably the best they've played all year."

The Aggies took a convincing 3-0 lead after doubles action Friday against Collin County and nearly pulled off the sweep in singles action. Against DBU, Cameron won all nine matches in straight sets.

Cameron again took the upper hand in doubles play against top-rated Tyler on Saturday night. The Aggies won two of three doubles matches, including Guerra and Zurita's 9-8 win over Marcus Lunt and Javier Herrera, who ended the fall as the No. 3 ranked junior college doubles team in the nation.

Tyler won each of the top two singles matches, but Cameron rallied to clinch the victory with wins in positions 3-5. Zurita posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Connor Smith in the No. 3 match, while Guerra and Alex Furlan used tie-breakers to get straight-set wins in the 4 and 5 spots.

Cameron returns to action at home Wednesday, hosting East Central University in men's and women's action scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., at the CU Tennis Complex.
