Trousdell, Aggies knock off Southwestern

GAME BOXSCORE»

WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Feb. 22) - Junior Arthur Trousdell reached the 20-point mark for the second consecutive game Tuesday night, posting a game-high 21 as the Aggie men's basketball team scored a 72-71 upset victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Melvin Mitchell's three-pointer with just over two minutes to play proved to be the game-winner as the Aggies improved to 15-11 overall. Southwestern had a shot to win it, but Jamaal Shell's three-point attempt in the final seconds was off the mark, sending the Bulldogs to their first loss to Cameron since 1999.

The teams battled back and fourth through eight lead changes in the second half on Tuesday night before Trousdell's layup tied the score at 69-69 with 3:09 left to play. Justin Harris then collected the rebound off a missed SWOSU shot on the ensuing possession before Mitchell canned the deciding three-pointer that put the Aggies up 72-69 with just over two minutes remaining on the clock.

Both teams had opportunities to add to their score in the final seconds. Shell missed a three-point attempt for the Bulldogs at the 1:37 mark and the Aggies missed three straight shots on their next possession. Darron Lewis pulled Southwestern within one with a bucket in the paint with 15 seconds remaining Marcus Girtmon missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw shooting situation seconds later to put the ball back in Shell's hands as time expired.

Lonnie Cooks led five Southwestern players in double figures with 15 points. Shell finished with 10 points, including just four in the second half.

Eric Moore added 17 points for the Aggies, while Girmon finished with 11. Harris and Trousdell shared game-high rebounding honors for the Aggies, each collecting nine boards to lead Cameron to a 37-28 rebounding advantage in the game. The Aggies shot better than 50 percent from the field in each half Tuesday, finishing with a 53.2 percent shooting effort for the game.

Southwestern (20-6, 7-4) opened up a 12-point lead in the first half, thanks to an 18-4 run that turned a 9-7 Aggie lead into a 25-13 advantage for the Bulldogs with just over 13 minutes left in the opening period. Southwestern converted four straight three-point attempts during the run.

Cameron got back into the game late in the half, using an 8-0 run that included five straight points by Trousdell to cut the lead to just four at 33-29. Southwestern got the lead back up to eight on Alex Robles' three-pointer before settling for a 41-36 halftime lead.
