Tennis teams blast East Central
LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 23) - Cameron's men's and women's teams battled the elements, along with Lone Star Conference rival East Central, on Wednesday and came out victorious.
The Lady Aggies took the court for the first time this spring and posted an 8-1 victory over the Tigers, while the Aggie men improved to 5-1 in spring action with a 6-1 win over ECU on a chilly afternoon at the CU Tennis Complex.
Coach James Helvey's Lady Aggies will continue action this week with three matches against LSC opponents in Tahlequah on Friday and Saturday. Both Cameron tennis teams are scheduled to travel to Durant to face Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday.
Cameron raced to a 3-0 lead after doubles action in the women's dual Wednesday. The Lady Aggies picked up a point by default at the No. 6 singles spot and got straight-set victories from Carolina Vera-Vera, Paulina Trujillo, Marianne Reeves and Meghan Goforth in flights 2-5. Dasha Segenchuk, tabbed No. 18 in the latest NCAA II singles national rankings, picked up East Central's only point of the match, winning at No. 1 singles in straight sets.
Though the men's final score was similar, the match proved to be much more competitive. All three doubles matches went to tie-breakers, with Cameron coming out on top in two.
The Aggies swept all four singles matches that made it one the court, but needed tie-breakers in three of four sets in the top two matches. Carlos Fernandez posted a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), win over Josue Paz at No.1, while Jordi Mullor outlasted Jack Odengren, 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-4), in the No. 2 match.
