Aggie tennis nets Friday sweep

LAWTON, Okla. (March 4) - The Cameron University men’s tennis team ran its record to 10-1 on the season with a pair of wins Friday at the CU Tennis Complex. Coach James Helvey’s Aggies defeated St. Mary’s University, 5-1, before outlasting conference rival Midwestern State in a 5½-hour showdown that ended in a 5-3 Cameron win.

The Aggies will complete weekend action at home Saturday, facing Central Oklahoma in a matchup scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

Cameron fell behind 2-1 after doubles action against MSU, but rallied with wins in the bottom three singles matches to take a 4-3 lead. The dual came down to the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, with Cameron needing to win just one to clinch the victory.

Alex Furlan won the first set of his match against MSU’s Gene Ligeon at No. 2, but Ligeon rallied with a 6-3 win in the second set. The two then deadlocked at 6-6 in the third set, sending the match to a third-set tie-breaker.

Carlos Fernandez faced a similar battle at the No. 1 slot, forcing a third set with MSU’s Rohan Williams after dropping the first set, 6-1. Fernandez won the second set 6-2, then broke a 4-4 tie in the third frame by winning the final two games to seal the match and team victory for Cameron with a 6-4 win in the set.

Furlan led 5-3 in his tiebreaker with Ligeon before the match was suspended.

Cameron opened the day with a swift victory over St. Mary’s. The Aggies won all three doubles points and Fernandez and Furlan each won their singles matches to clinch the win.
