Buben, Steen named to LSC honor roll
RICHARDSON, Texas (March 8) - Senior Christina Buben and junior Melissa Steen have been recognized for academic achievement by the Lone Star Conference. Both Cameron women's basketball players were named to the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll in a release by league officials Tuesday.
A senior from Duncan, Buben earned her third consecutive appearance on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Buben also earned All-LSC North honorable mention earlier this week after finishing her senior season as Cameron's leading rebounder with 6.1 per game. She played and started in every Lady Aggie contest over the past three seasons, a string of 81 consecutive games, and was second on the team this season with an 8.4 scoring average.
Steen, who transferred to Cameron prior to the 2003-04 season from Oklahoma State University, earned Commissioner's Honor Roll recognition in her first year to be eligible for the award. An Altus native, Steen finished fifth on the Lady Aggies in scoring this season, averaging 6.0 points per game. She also averaged 5.9 rebounds, including a team-high 2.3 offensive boards per game.
Five conference players were selected to the LSC North All-Academic team, led by LSC North Academic Player of the Year Paige Adams of Southwestern Oklahoma State. Joining Adams on the LSC North All-Academic Team were Rikki Hall and Alicia Keys of Northeastern State, Central Oklahoma's Laura Hamilton and Autumn Aneshansley of Southwestern Oklahoma State.
The LSC South All-Academic team includes Suni Jo Petty of West Texas A&M, Natalja Tsurbakova and Sharon Ballenger of Angelo State, Kierstan Barbee from Abilene Christian and Eastern New Mexico's Laci Lee. Petty was selected as the LSC South Academic Player of the Year.
To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.20 grade point average with a minimum of 24 semester hours at the nominating institution. The All-Academic Team is selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. All qualifying student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
