Lady Aggies fall to Presbyterian College
LAWTON, Okla. (March 8) – The Cameron University women’s tennis team suffered just its second loss of the season on Tuesday. Coach James Helvey’s Lady Aggie (6-2) dropped a 5-4 decision to Presbyterian College in a dual that went down to the final match at the CU Tennis Complex.
Cameron grabbed a 2-1 lead in the team score, winning two of three doubles matches. Cameron also won at No. 3 singles with Paulina Trujillo and with Taylor Ivie at No. 6.
But Presbyterian forged a 4-4 tie, winning at Nos. 2, 4 and 5. The contest came down to the No. 1 singles match, where Cameron’s Thatianne Moreira took an early advantage by winning the first set, 6-2. Moreira had a chance to close out the match, leading in a second-set tie-breaker. But Presbyterian’s Catherine Bankhead rallied to force a third set, wining 7-6 (8-6).
In the third set, Moreira again jumped in front, leading 4-1. But Bankhead rallied once again, winning the final five games of the set to take match with a 6-4 win.
Both Cameron tennis teams return to action next week. The Aggies and Lady Aggies with face St. Edward’s University, Incarnate Word, St. Mary’s and Dallas Baptist in a four-day span beginning Sunday in Austin, Texas.
