Aggies sluggish in opening round

DUNCAN, Okla. (March 14) - A sluggish effort on the back nine forced the Cameron men's golf team to settle for a sixth-place showing after first round action at The Territory Collegiate Classic Monday at The Territory Golf Club near Duncan.

Coach Jerry Hrnciar's Aggies posted a team score of 301 (+13), finishing 16 strokes behind tournament leader Southern Nazarene. All 15 teams in the tournmanet field will compete in a final round beginning Tuesday morning.

The par-72, 7,110-yard layout at The Territory yielded just six rounds below par on Monday, despite relatively tame playing conditions. Five players share the lead with opening-round scores of 70, including teammates Blake Trimble and Derek Dickson of Southern Nazarene. SNU's Brian Ault lurks just a stroke back after firing a one-under 71.

Sophomore Owen Mahaffey led the Aggies with a 73. Travis Lovins, aided by a rare double-eagle on the par-5 7th hole, finished with a 74 and was the only other Aggie to crack the Top 20 individual standings after the first round.

Ryan King added a 76 for the Aggies, while Nic Ware and Brian Adams each carded a 78. Four of Cameron's five team members posted higher scores on the back nine Monday. Only Mahaffey, who toured the final nine holes with a one-uner 35, scored lower on the back. Lovins was three-under at the turn before shooting five-over on the back nine.

Southern Nazarene leads the team standings by a healthy six strokes over second-place Washburn entering Tuesday's final round. Three teams are tied for third at 298.
