LAWTON, Okla. (March 28) - Nicole Fleming's one-out homer in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Cameron softball team its second conference victory of the season on Monday at Cameron Field.
The Lady Aggies dropped the first game of a doubleheader with Midwestern State 9-0, but rallied for a 3-2 win in the nightcap to improve to 6-24 overall and 2-10 in conference play. Cameron will continue Lone Star Conference North Division play on Tuesday, hosting Southwestern Oklahoma State in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Midwestern State (24-13, 12-4 LSC North) held a 2-1 lead in Monday's second contest heading into Cameron's final two turns at the plate. But Melinda Farrow laced a two-out RBI single to score Vanessa Rodriguez in the sixth.
Jessica Hutton then came on in relief of Cameron starting pitcher Lindsay Williams and shut down the Lady Indians in the top of the seventh, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Midwestern State countered with ace Brittany Willson taking the mound to start the seventh inning. Willson (13-9) struck out the first Cameron batter she faced, before Fleming ended the game by lifting a ball deep to straight-away center field. The blast was Fleming's second homer of the season, and the first since another solo shot against Southern Arkansas on Feb. 18.
Fleming finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate, accounting for two of Cameron's three RBI's in the game. Farrow also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Hutton (2-8) picked up the mound victory. Williams scattered seven hits and allowed two runs while striking out five in six innings.
Monday's first contest was a pitching battle until Midwestern State opened up with an eight-run effort in the top of the fifth. The Lady Indians capitalized on two Cameron errors and four walks in the inning, erasing what had been a solid pitching effort to that point by Lady Aggie senior Kelly Holden.
Holden (1-10) took the loss, allowing just two earned runs while striking out three. Williams came on to finish the fifth and allowed one run on one hit.
MSU's Willson and Ashley Kuchenski combined to limit Cameron hitters to just four hits in the game. Kuchenski (2-1) got the win, allowing just two hits while striking out five in four innings of work.
