Lady Aggies get sweep over SWOSU

UPDATED STATISTICS»

LAWTON, Okla. (March 29) - Nicole Fleming continued her hot streak at the plate and Melinda Farrow collected a pair of clutch hits, leading the Cameron softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Lone Star Conference rival Southwestern Oklahoma State Tueday at Cameron Field.

The Lady Aggies won by scores of 5-4 and 2-1, improving to 8-24 overall with their third straight win. Cameron will look to extend its winning streak on Saturday, when the Lady Aggies pay a visit to Southwestern in Weatherford.

Both contests Tuesday came down to the final at-bat, with Farrow delivering on both occasions. Her two-out game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh in Game 1 capped a dramatic Lady Aggie comeback, while her solo home run just to the right of center field in the bottom of the eighth inning of the nightcap broke a tie and ended the game.

Fleming did her part, as well. The senior from Yukon followed up her own seventh-inning game-winning home run on Monday against Midwestern State with a 4-for-6 effort at the plate against the Lady Bulldogs. Fleming went 2-for-3 in each game, picking up three RBI on a pair of doubles in the first contest.

Southwestern jumped out to a 4-1 lead in Tuesday's opener before the Lady Aggies chipped away. Freshman Kristal Maxwell belted her first homer of the season in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-2. In the sixth, Cameron capitalized on three Southwestern errors and tied the score on Fleming's two-run double to the gap in left-center, setting the stage for Farrow's heroics in the seventh.

After Maxwell walked to open the frame, Stephanie Bour advanced Maxwell to second on a sacrifice bunt. Vanessa Rodriguez lined out and Casey Seabolt drew a two-out walk before Farrow laced a single down the right field line to score Maxwell with the game-winner.

Kelly Holden picked up the mound victory for the Lady Aggies after pitching two innings of scoreless relief of starter Jessica Hutton. Both pitchers combined to strike out five while allowing just one walk. Southwestern out-hit the Lady Aggies 10-5 in the game, but stranded seven baserunners.

Cameron took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of Tuesday's second contest when Fleming used heads-up base running to score following a single by Bridgette Davis.

Lindsay Williams took a shutout into the seventh inning for the Lady Aggies, before Southwestern tied the score on an RBI double by Sarah Hamilton. Cameron's offense stalled in the bottom half of the frame, sending the game to extra innings. But with the score still tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Farrow connected on her sixth home run of the season to give Cameron the sweep.

Williams picked up her fourth win of the season on the mound, allowing just one earned run in eight innings of work to lower her team-leading ERA to 2.34 for the year. Cameron out-hit SWOSU 9-8 in the nightcap, but the Lady Bulldogs stranded 11 runners on base in the game.

Farrow finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate with two RBI.
