Aggie hitters pound Southeastern Oklahoma

UPDATED STATISTICS»

LAWTON, Okla. (March 30) - Coach Todd Holland's Cameron baseball team pounded out 37 hits Wednesday, including six home runs, fueling a doubleheader sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma State in the Lone Star Conference North Division openers for both teams.

Cameron won by scores of 13-8 and 14-5, improving to 16-11 on the year. The Aggies, winners of five of their last six games, will look to remain unbeated in conference play on Saturday, travelling to Weatherford to begin a three-game series with Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Southeastern got on the scoreboard first on Wednesday, capitalizing on three Cameron errors in the first inning of Game 1 to take a 4-0 lead. But the Aggies stormed back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and took the lead with a five-run effort in the third that was sparked by five consecutive Aggie singles to open the frame.

Cameron stretched the lead to 11-5 in the fourth on John Herbert's solo homer and a two-RBI triple by Cody Brooks.

L.J. Willis ran his mound record to 6-2 with the complete-game victory for the Aggies. The junior right-hander from Taylor, Ariz., scattered eight hits and allowed just four earned runs while striking out three.

After spotting the Savages a 1-0 lead to start the second contest, Cameron's offense again went to work. The Aggies pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead, then broke the game open with a seven-run second inning that saw 11 Cameron players step to the plate. The Aggies racked up seven hits in the inning, including homers by Greg Patton, Derrick Mihecoby and Herbert to take a 9-1 lead.

Southeastern threatened to rally, cutting the lead to 9-5 with Dallas Vanderford's two-RBI single in the top of the fifth. But Cameron responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame, capped by Corey Stang's two-RBI double to right-center.

Dustin Henry (4-1) got the mound victory for the Aggies. Brad Passmore just missed out on picking up his fifth save of the season, but held Southeastern scoreless over the final 2 2/3 innings while allowing just one hit in relief.

Mihecoby finished the day 5-for-9 at the plate, boosting his conference-leading batting average to .476 for the year. Herbert went 6-for-8 with a pair of homers and four RBI, while Patton had two round-trippers and six RBI. As a team, the Aggies posted a .514 (37-for-72) batting average for the day, raising their overall team batting average for the season to .343.
