Lady Aggies pick up key win over Midwestern
LAWTON, Okla. (March 30) - The Cameron University women’s tennis team ran its record to 13-3 on the season Wednesday, picking up a key victory over Lone Star Conference rival Midwestern State. Coach James Helvey’s squad rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to win four of six singles matches to claim a 5-4 win over the Lady Indians at the CU Tennis Complex.
Cameron will look to add to its win total this weekend, hosting St. Mary’s University, Eastern New Mexico and Central Oklahoma in a four-way meet beginning Friday and continuing through Saturday on the Cameron campus.
Wednesday’s contest came down to the No. 4 singles match, where Cameron’s Paulina Trujillo and Midwestern’s Lacey Wuthrich battled to split the first two sets of the best-of-three match. But Trujillo owned the deciding set, winning 6-1 in the final frame to give the Lady Aggies the victory.
Cameron also got singles victories from Thatianne Moreira and Carolina Vera-Vera at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, while Taylor Ivie posted a straight-set win in the No. 6 singles match. The Lady Aggies’ only doubles point came at No. 1, where Moreira and Vera-Vera teamed to post an 8-5 win over MSU’s Frida Arlegard and Cilia Muller.
