Helvey nabs 100th win as Lady Aggies coach
LAWTON, Okla. (April 2) - Headd coach James Helvey collected his 100th victory as the Cameron women's tennis coach Saturday and the Lady Aggies ran their current winning streak to nine matches with easy wins over Eastern New Mexico University and St. Mary's University at the CU Tennis Complex.
Cameron defeated ENMU 7-2 before handing St. Mary's a 9-0 loss, giving Helvey 1001 wins since taking over as the Lady Aggies' head coach prior to the 1999-2000 season. Helvey also has more than 200 victories as the head coach of the Cameron men's tennis squad.
The Lady Aggies got off to a solid start against Eastern New Mexico, winning two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. The Zias got a win at No. 1 singles when Elyse Jacques outlasted Cameron's Thatianne Moreira, but Cameron swept the remaining matches in straigh sets to give Helvey win No. 100.
Against St. Mary's, the Lady Aggies failed to lose a set. Cameron won all three doubles matches and had but one challenge in singles play, as Marianne Reeves rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to post a 6-2, 7-5 win over Alison Pino.
Cameron (16-3) will return to action with the Aggie men's team on Wednesday, traveling to Ada to face Lone Star Conference rival East Central. Both teams also will visit Abilene Christian on Friday.
