Lady Aggies fall to No. 18 Central Oklahoma

UPDATED STATISTICS»

EDMOND, Okla. (April 5) - Coach Brent Shaw had his Cameron softball team in position to knock off 18th-ranked Central Oklahoma on Tuesday, but the Bronchos posted an extra-inning victory in the first game of a Lone Star Conference North Division doubleheader.

Cameron lost the first game 4-3 on Tommie Mitts' RBI single in the bottom of the ninth and lost Game 2 by a 9-1 count to fall to 8-28 overall and 4-14 in LSC North play.

Central Oklahoma (31-11, 15-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening game on a two-RBI single by Mitts in the bottom of the second before the Lady Aggies began to chip away. Nicole Fleming plated a run with a bases-loaded fielder's choice in the top of the third and homered to left field to begin the sixth frame to pull Cameron within one at 3-2.

Cameron tied the game on Stephanie Bour's first home run of the season with one out in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.

Both teams went scoreless in the eighth before Rachel Smith opened the bottom of the ninth with a double to left center for the Bronchos. After a ground-out moved Smith to third, Shaw elected to load the bases with a pair of intentional walks. But Mitts followed with her third RBI of the game to give UCO the win.

Jessica Hutton (2-9) took the loss for Cameron despite allowing just two earned runs in the complete-game effort. Hutton scattered 10 hits and struck out one. Bour led the Lady Aggies at the plate, going 2-for-4. Fleming was 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Tuesday's second game remained close until the fourth, when UCO plated four runs to open up a 6-0 advantage. Central Oklahoma pitcher Alli Blake took a perfect game into the fifth inning before Melinda Farrow busted up the no-hitter and the shutout with a solo homer to left field.

Farrow's blast was the only hit of the game for the Lady Aggies, as UCO ended the game by run-rule with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Kelly Holden (2-12) took the mound loss for Cameron, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts.

Cameron will get another shot at the Bronchos later this week. The Lady Aggies will play host to UCO on Friday in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
