LAWTON, Okla. (April 12) - Melinda Farrow's solo homer in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the game-winner Tuesday, as the Cameron softball rallied to split a doubleheader with conference rival East Central.
The Lady Aggies dropped the first contest 4-2, but came back to win 2-1 in the nightcap, improving to 10-30 overall and 6-16 in Lone Star Conference North Division play. Coach Brent Shaw's squad will look to end the 2005 season on a high note this weekend, visiting East Central for a Saturday doubleheader to conclude the regular season.
Both teams battled strong winds and solid pitching Tuesday, as four pitchers combined to allow just five earned runs on the day. Kelly Holden took the loss in Game 1 for the Lady Aggies despite striking out four and allowing just one earned run. Lindsay Williams struck out six without a walk in the nightcap, allowing just one earned run to get the victory.
East Central's Cara Gaskins picked up the mound win in the opening contest while allowing just one earned run and ECU's Karah McFatter allowed just four hits and two runs in the secong game.
East Central (10-25, 4-18 LSC North) took the early lead in Game 1, capitalizing on a Lady Aggie error to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Cameron cut the lead in half in the fifth when Jen Morse scored on an ECU throwing error, but McFatter singled in a run in the sixth and Courtney McCarty added an RBI single in the seventh for the Lady Tigers.
Cameron threatened with two outs in the seventh, but Stephanie Bour was thrown out at third on an RBI single by Melinda Farrow to end the game.
East Central scored first again in the second game, getting an RBI double by McFatter in the top of the fourth to go up 1-0. But the Lady Aggies manufactured a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Casey Seabolt and Farrow led off the bottom of the sixth with a line-drive shot over the left field wall to give the Lady Aggies their first lead of the day.
East Central got a pair of runners on in the top of the seventh, but with two outs and runners on first and second, Vanessa Rodriguez scooped up a ground ball at third. She turned and flipped to Casey Seabolt, who alertly covered the bag on the force play, to give the Lady Aggies the win.
