Lady Aggies turn back Southern Nazarene
LAWTON, Okla. (April 12) - The 34th-ranked Cameron women's tennis team ran its record to 17-4 Tuesday, dispatching Southern Nazarene University on a windy afternoon at the CU Tennis Complex.
Cameron won two of three doubles matches and five of six singles bouts to post a 7-2 victory over the NAIA's Crimson Storm. Coach James Helvey's squad will continue action later this week, travelling to Edmond with the Aggie men's team to participate in the annual UCO Broncho Invitational.
Each of Cameron's five singles victories against SNU came in straight sets, including Paulina Trujillo's convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Heather Parnell in the No. 4 slot. Taylor Ivie gave up just three games in the No. 6 match, defeating Larissa Anson, 6-2, 6-1. Marianne Reeves blanked Jana Maker 6-0 in the first set of the No. 3 singles match before closing out the win with a 6-4 win in the second set.
The Lady Aggies also got a 6-2, 6-3, victory from Mehgan Goforth over SNU's Brooke Ruder at No. 5, while Carolina Vera-Vera posted a hard-earned 7-6, 6-4, win over Dasha Ivanova at No. 2. Southern Nazarene's only singles point came at No. 1, where Larikah Russel, the top-ranked singles player in the nation at the NAIA level, posted a 6-1, 6-3, win over Cameron's Thatianne Moreira.
