Lady Aggie golf inks first recruits
LAWTON, Okla. (April 15) – Lawton High School teammates Renee Breeze and Lauren Gonzalez became the inaugural members of the Cameron University women’s golf team on Thursday, signing National Letters of Intent to join the fledgling Lady Aggie program beginning this fall.
With Breeze and Gonzalez, Lawton High qualified for the high school state championship tournament three consecutive years, winning a conference title in 2003.
“We are very proud to have these two young ladies become the first-ever members of the Cameron University women’s golf team,” Lady Aggie head coach Rick Goodwin said. “Lauren and Renee are both quality players from right here in our own back yard and we’re confident they will help us in our goal of making Cameron an immediate force in NCAA Division II women’s golf.”
Gonzalez, who is the daughter of Raul and Carrie Gonzalez, turned in a scoring average of 81 in her senior year at Lawton High. Breeze earned all-conference honors and was a 2005 honorable mention All-State selection in girls basketball by The Daily Oklahoman. She is the daughter of Randy and Brenda Breeze.
Goodwin was a member of the Cameron coaching staff from 1976 to 1984, assisting Aggie men’s golf coach Jerry Hrnciar during Cameron’s run to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship in 1983. He also returns to the Cameron golf program with 24 years experience as a teaching professional, serving most recently as an Assistant Golf Professional at Lawton Country Club. He passed the Professional Golf Association (PGA) playability test in 1995 and became a Class A member of the PGA of America in 1998. Goodwin is a two-time attendee of the PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit.
The Cameron University women’s golf team will compete in the NCAA Division II as a member of the Lone Star Conference. Six other schools in the 15-member league also support women’s golf: Central Oklahoma, Northeastern State, Southwestern Oklahoma State, Tarleton State, Texas A&M-Commerce and West Texas A&M.
