Aggies second at LSC championships

TROPHY CLUB, Texas (April 18) - Owen Mahaffey's bid to repeat as the Lone Star Conference men's golf individual champion got off to a good start Monday.
Mahaffey leads the field of 40 golfers with a two-round total of 141 (-3) and has the Aggies in position to repeat as LSC champs, as well, sitting just one shot out of the team lead heading into Tuesday's final round. Mahaffey fired rounds of 70-71, while the Aggies posted team scores of 292 and 289 on The Hogan Course at Trophy Club Country Club.
“We played really hard today,” Cameron head coach Jerry Hrnciar said of his team’s effort. “Our guys knew there was no margin of error and I’m really proud of the way they hung in there. We only had 12 or 13 birdies over the two rounds and eight of those were Owen’s. Hopefully the birdies will come tomorrow.”
Mahaffey was one of only four players in the eight-team tournament to break par for the day on the par-72, 6,953-yard Hogan Course layout. The Wichita Falls native was the only player in the field to post subpar scores in each of the first two rounds.
Canadian, Texas, junior Travis Lovins posted a two-round total of 145 (+1) for the Aggies, while Sherman, Texas, junior Brian Adams and Duncanville, Texas, senior Ryan King each finished the first 36 holes of the 54-hole event with a three-over total of 147. King, the individual champion at the 2003 conference tournament, carded a 75 in Monday’s opening round before rallying for an even-par 72 in the second loop. Lawton junior Scott Watson, playing in his first competitive rounds of the 2004-05 season, shot 81-80.
NortheasternStateturned in a team score of one under par in the opening round on Monday, but slipped to three-over with a team score of 292 in Round 2. East Central is a distant third in the team scoring, eight strokes behind the Aggies. Tournament favorite Central Oklahoma, which entered the week ranked second in the nation in Golfstat’s head-to-head rankings and No. 3 in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Division II Top 25, is a disappointing fifth entering Tuesday’s final round. The Bronchos are 16 strokes behind Northeastern with a two-round total of 595 (+19).
“I kind of think Northeastern played as good as they can play today,” Hrnciar said. “I think we can play better than we did today, so I like our position. Hopefully our guys will play as good as they did today and a few more putts will fall.”
AGGIE NOTES: A banquet Sunday night for teams participating in the conference tournament featured the announcement of this year’s All-Lone Star Conference team members. Cameron was well-represented, with Lovins and Mahaffey earning first team All-LSC honors. King was named to the all-conference second team.
