Tennis teams bounced in LSC semifinals

ABILENE, Texas (April 21) – The 17th-ranked Cameron University men’s tennis team suffered just its second loss to a Division II opponent Thursday, falling to rival Midwestern State in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference championships on the campus of Abilene Christian University.

The No. 2 seed in the six-team event, Cameron lost 5-0 to fall to 20-3 on year. Midwestern State advances to face top seed ACU in Saturday’s title match.

Midwestern State swept doubles play against the Aggies, though each of the three matches were close. Gene Ligeon and Rohan Williams made it 3-0 Indians by outlasting Oscar Guerra and Alex Furlan 9-8, winning the tie-breaker in the final game by a 7-5 count.

MSU then closed out the match with a pair of wins in singles play, avenging a 5-3 loss to the Aggies on March 4, in Lawton.

Cameron’s only other loss to a Division II opponent came earlier this month to No. 13 ACU. The Aggies also lost an early-season match to the University of Oklahoma.

The 34th-ranked Cameron women’s tennis team found the sledding tough in the semifinals, as well. The Lady Aggies notched a 5-4 victory over Tarleton State in the opening round of the tournament before falling 5-1 to seventh-ranked ACU in the semis.

Midwestern State’s women also pulled off an upset victory, winning 5-2 over 20th-ranked Northeastern State in Friday’s other semifinal matchup. The Lady Indians will meet host ACU on Saturday morning to decide the women’s LSC crown.

Cameron’s lone team point against the Wildcats came in doubles play, where Carolina Vera-Vera and Mehgan Goforth teamed for a 9-8 victory over ACU’s tandem of Holly Lindloff and Lana Pavlin. ACU owned a 2-1 advantage after doubles play and collected three singles victories to secure the win.

Next up for both Cameron teams is a trip to the NCAA II South Central Regional Championships, which are scheduled to begin May 6.
