Late-season slump continues for Aggies

EDMOND, Okla. (April 24) – The Cameron University baseball team entered its weekend series with ninth-ranked Central Oklahoma with a chance to regain the top position in the Lone Star Conference North Division standings.
But an uncharacterically absent offense left the Aggies with seven losses in their last nine games. Cameron was shut out twice Saturday by UCO, before losing Sunday's game 13-3.
Coach Todd Holland's squad will look to regroup on Wednesday, travelling to Tahlequah for an LSC North doubleheader with Northeastern State.
After getting shut out for the first time this season on Saturday, Cameron managed to score early on Sunday against the Bronchos. UCO plated two runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead, but the Aggies answered in the top of the second. Cameron recorded two hits and capitalized on two Broncho errors in the inning to knot the score.
Central Oklahoma regained the lead with a five-run second inning that included a two-run double by Beau Sullivan before Cameron trimmed the lead to 7-3 on Corey Stang's RBI single in the third.
But that's as close as the Aggies could get.
The Bronchos extended their lead with two runs in the bottom half of the third inning and made it 10-3 on an RBI single by Trent Davis in the fourth. Sullivan's two-RBI double to right-center in the bottom of the seventh capped a three-run inning for the Bronchos and ended the game, which was scheduled for nine innings, by run-rule.
Cameron's offensive struggles started on Saturday against UCO, which entered the weekend with the top-rated pitching staff in the conference. The Aggies tallied just eight hits on the day, including just three in the nightcap. UCO, meanwhile, collected 21 hits, 16 of which came in a 15-0 Game 2 rout.
Both teams failed to push a run across through six innings of Saturday's opener as Cameron's Ryan Bengert and UCO's Jesse McGough enjoyed a solid pitcher's duel. But Blake Deen opened the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single for the Bronchos and advanced to second on Matt Yost's sacrifice bunt. Pinch hitter Trent Davis followed with a single through the right side to score Deen and end the game with a 1-0 UCO win.
Cameron went through three pitchers in the first inning of Saturday's second contest, as UCO racked up 11 runs on nine hits in the frame. The Bronchos added four more in the fourth and Chris Jones and Jamie Ripple combined for the shutout as UCO cruised to the easy win.
