TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (April 27) – Derrick Mihecoby's three-run homer in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against Northeastern State helped propel the Cameron baseball team to a decisive 12-0 win over the Redmen.
The win pushed the Aggies to 27-20 on the season, assuring the team of its highest season win total since the 1992 Cameron squad went 31-20 en route to the Lone Star Conference Championship.
Northeastern State won Wednesday's opener 5-2 before the Aggies rallied in the nightcap to improve to 13-9 in LSC North Division play. Cameron will conclude the 2005 regular season at home this weekend. A three-game series with East Central begins with a Saturday doubleheader slated to begin at 2 p.m. A single nine-inning contest is scheduled for Sunday, with eight Cameron seniors being honored prior to the 2 p.m., start.
Cameron wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the second game against the Redmen. Coach Todd Holland's Aggies opened the game with three straight singles, including an RBI drive to right by Mihecoby, and capitalized on two NSU errors later in the frame to take a 4-0 lead. Mihecoby made it a 7-0 contest in the second inning with his three-run homer.
The Aggies tacked on three more runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Cody Brooks and John Herbert's sacrifice fly. Matt Castillo drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth and Trey Chambers singled in a run in the sixth to round out the scoring for Cameron.
Dustin Henry (6-3) posted the complete-game victory on the mound, allowing just five hits while striking out three. Castillo led the Aggies at the plate with a 4-for-4 effort, while Mihecoby finished 3-for-4 with four runs batted in.
Northeastern State (22-31, 6-16 LSC North) handed Cameron its eighth loss in 10 games in Wednesday's opener. Cody Hughey tossed a complete-game five-hitter to get the win for the Redmen.
Cameron pitcher L.J. Willis, who entered the day needing just one win to become the Aggies' all-time single-season leader for pitching victories, fell to 10-3 on the year with the loss in Game 1. Willis worked his sixth complete game of the year and allowed just two earned runs in the game. But two Cameron fourth-inning errors allowed the Redmen to take a 3-1 lead and Bobby Winfrey laced a two-run triple in the fifth to give NSU the win.
