LAWTON, Okla. (April 30) – Derrick Mihecoby blasted a game-winning home run in the seventh inning of Game 1, then added a two-run shot in the nightcap as the Cameron baseball team swept a doubleheader from East Central Saturday at McCord Field.
Mihecoby's walk-off homer gave the Aggies a 3-2 win in the opener before cruising to a 10-1 victory in Game 2. Cameron will host ECU again on Sunday, concluding the weekend series with a nine-inning contest scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Eight Aggie seniors playing their final game in a Cameron uniform will be honored in Senior Day ceremonies prior to Sunday's game.
Cameron held a slim 2-1 lead entering the seventh inning of Saturday's opener. But East Central knotted the score on Matthew Stout's bases-loaded bunt single off Aggie starter Ryan Bengert. Josh Smith (2-0) came on in relief and retired the only two batters he faced in the top of the seventh.
Cameron's first two hitters in the bottom of the frame flied out before Mihecoby sent a two-out pitch over the wall in left field to end the game.
The Aggies scored scored first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on John Herbert's RBI single through the right side that scored Mihecoby. East Central picked up its first run on another RBI bunt single by Stout in the third.
Herbert opened the sixth frame for the Aggies with a double down the right field line and scored on Greg Patton's RBI single to center, giving Cameron the 2-1 lead.
Saturday's second contest was less dramatic. Cameron broke a scoreless tie with seven runs in a seven-hit third inning that included Mihecoby's two-run blast to left-center. The Aggies also got scoring hits from Patton, Matt Castillo and Trey Chambers in the inning.
East Central plated its lone run on a Kevin Wilkett RBI single in the fourth, while Cameron added a run in each its next three trips to the plate to extend the lead.
Brad Passmore (3-2) picked up the complete-game victory on the mound for the Aggies in Game 2, scattering five hits while striking out four.
Patton and Herbert each collected four hits on the day for the Aggies. Patton was 3-for-3 with an RBI in Game 1. Castillo was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap.
The heart of Cameron's lineup (the 3-6 hitters) accounted for all nine of the Aggies' hits in the first contest, while all nine Aggie batters hit safely for a total of 15 hits in Game 2.
