VALDOSTA, Ga. – A solid afternoon rally has the Cameron University men's golf team in the driver's seat following the opening round of play at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships. Coach Jerry Hrnciar's squad boasts three of the top five individual leaders after the first round and enters Tuesday's action with a three-stroke lead over St. Edward's University at Kinderlou Forest Country Club in Valdosta.

Cameron posted a 295 team score on Monday, good for 7-over par at the par-72 Kinderlou Forest layout, which measures well over 7,500 yards. St. Edward's was next with a 298, followed by St. Mary's University at 300. Third-ranked Central Oklahoma is fourth after an opening-round 303. All eight teams competing in the South Central Regional began play on the back nine on Monday, while eight other teams competing in the South Regional started on the front nine.

Aggie sophomore Owen Mahaffey leads the individual race after posting a 1-under 71. The Wichita Falls, Texas, native was two-over through 12 holes, but rallied with three straight birdies to take the lead. Teammate Ryan King held the individual lead for much of Monday's opening round, but bogeyed his final two holes. King settled for an even-par 72, putting the Duncanville, Texas, native in a three-way tie for second behind Mahaffey. Travis Lovins, a junior from Canadian, Texas, is alone in fifth place after carding a 73.

Junior Brian Adams finished with a 79 and senior Scott Watson posted an 84 to round out the scoring for the Aggies.

Cameron looked to be in for a long day as the team neared completion of its first nine holes. With 39 total holes completed, the Aggies were at the bottom of the leaderboard with a team score of +8. But Mahaffey and King each birdied the par-3 17th hole and King added a birdie on No. 18. Lovins then birdied No.1, before Mahaffey began his string of three straight birdies on the par-5 fourth hole.

Two eight-team regional tournaments are being staged at Kinderlou Forest this week. Teams from the South and South Central Regions will complete one round each day in the 54-hole event, which is scheduled to conclude Wednesday. Live scoring for both regionals, including team and individual scores updated periodically throughout each round, is available online at www.golfstat.com. The top team in each region, along with the team with the next lowest score in either region, will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships, May 17-20, at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Ga.
