Golfers slip to fifth at South Central regional

LIVE SCORING» (courtesy of GolfStat.com)

VALDOSTA, Ga. (May 3) - A first-round lead at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships quickly evaporated for the Cameron men's golf team on Tuesday.

Coach Jerry Hrnciar's Aggies, who led the field of eight teams after Monday's opening round of the 54-hole tournament, fell to fifth place with a second-round team score of 308.

Sophomore Owen Mahaffey remains among the individual leaders despite a round of 77 on Tuesday. The Wichita Falls, Texas, native dropped from first to fifth on the leaderboard, but lurks just two shots out of the lead entering Wednesday's third and final round.

But none of Cameron's five players broke 75 on Tuesday, as the Aggies' three-stroke team lead was erased just a few holes into the second round. Senior Ryan King carded a six-over-par 42 on the front nine before posting the Aggies' high score of the day with an 80. Travis Lovins was five-over at the turn and played the back nine at even par to finish with a 77. Brian Adams went 38-40 for a six-over 78.

Lawton senior Scott Watson, who struggled to an opening round 84 on Monday, provided the low score of the day for the Aggies with a second-round 76. Watson recorded four of Cameron's nine birdies on the day.

Third-ranked Central Oklahoma vaulted to the team lead on Tuesday with an even-par team score of 288 in the second round. The Bronchos are four strokes ahead of Northeastern State with a team score of 591 (+15). Cameron is 12 strokes back with a team total of 603.

Northeastern State's Brad Risenhoover and Greg McAuley of St. Mary's University share the individual lead with a two-round total of 146 (+2).

Two eight-team regional tournaments are being staged at Kinderlou Forest this week. Teams from the South and South Central Regions will complete one round each day in the 54-hole event, which is scheduled to conclude Wednesday. Live scoring for both regionals, including team and individual scores updated periodically throughout each round, is available online at www.golfstat.com. The top team in each region, along with the team with the next lowest score in either region, will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships, May 17-20, at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Ga.
