Aggie players, coach pick up LSC baseball honors
RICHARDSON, Texas (May 9) – After posting the team’s most successful record in nearly 15 years, members of the Cameron University baseball team have received individual recognition in the Lone Star Conference. A total of seven Aggie players earned All-LSC North honors this week, including four first team selections. Aggie head coach Todd Holland also was recognized, sharing Co-Coach of the Year honors in the division following voting by the division’s six head coaches.
Senior catcher Derrick Mihecoby and senior second baseman Cody Brooks, along with junior pitcher L.J. Willis and junior outfielder Greg Patton each earned first team All-LSC honors for the Aggies.
Mihecoby ranked among the conference leaders in several offensive statistics this season, finishing with a .426 batting average with 13 home runs, 14 doubles and 56 runs batted in. He also stole a team-high 18 bases and scored 58 runs. Brooks led the team and ranked among the LSC leaders with 61 runs scored this year. He also posted 38 runs batted in and established a new school record by being hit by a pitch 16 times.
Willis was the Aggies’ top pitcher this season, tying a school record with 10 mound victories. He finished with a 10-3 record and a team-low 3.96 earned run average. Willis also led the team with 45 strikeouts against just 18 walks. Patton led the Aggies and finished fourth in the conference this season with a .432 batting average – the highest season average for a Cameron hitter since second team all-region selection Jeremy Wagner hit .438 for the Aggies in 1999.
Junior first baseman John Herbert, who hit .420 this season, and senior designated hitter Corey Stang, who led the Aggies in both doubles and walks, both were named to the All-LSC North second team. Junior shortstop Trey Chambers earned All-LSC North honorable mention.
Holland, who was an All-LSC and all-region honoree as a Cameron player in 1998, shared LSC North Coach of the Year accolades with Central Oklahoma’s Wendell Simmons. In two seasons as the Aggies’ skipper, Holland has produced an overall record of 55-40 (.579).
Cameron finished the 2005 season as runner-up in the competitive LSC North Division. The Aggies finished with a 29-21 overall record, marking the highest win total for the team since posting a 31-20 record en route to the 1992 Lone Star Conference championship.
