Moreno leads Ags in first XC meet

ADA, Okla. (Sept. 10) - Marlow freshman Matt Moreno broke the 30-minute barrier, finishing in 22nd place individually to lead the Cameron men's cross country team at the East Central University Tiger Chase on Saturday.

Fellow freshman Frank Fleming also finished among the Top 30 indivduals in the meet, which was the first of the season for Coach Matt Aguero's Aggies, who are in their inaugural year of competition.

"For being as young as we are, I thought we ran pretty well," Aguero said. "It was the first time our guys have run a five-mile race and we ran on the most difficult course we'll see all season, so I'm pleased with our effort and know that we'll continue to improve."

Moreno paced the Aggies with a time of 29:50.3, finishing second among all freshmen participating in the race. Fleming, also a freshman from Marlow, followed in 26th place overall with a time of 30:06.9.

"Frank really suprised me with his time," Aguero said. "I thought Matt would be able to go under 30 minutes, too, so it was good to see both of them run so well."

Duncan freshman Jon McMasters added a time of 32:47.5 for the Aggies, while Walters freshman Andrew Braisier turned in a 40:25.3.

Host East Central won the team title in the event with 23 total points. The Tigers placed six runners among the Top 11 finishers, including individual meet champion Josh Stewart, who toured the eight-kilometer course in a time of 26:16.5.

Next up for the Aggies is a trip to Joplin, Mo., this Saturday for the Missouri Southern State College Stampede, an event that features a host of NCAA Division I schools.
