ABILENE, Texas (Sept. 13) - A sizzling effort on the back nine gave the Cameron men's golf team a come-from-behind victory Tuesday at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate.

Coach Jerry Hrnciar's crew rallied from six shots down in their first event of the season to post a convincing six-stroke victory over host Abilene Christian, as Aggie senior Travis Lovins claimed medalist honors at the par-71, 6,977-yard layout at the Diamondback Golf Club.

Lovins fired a final-round 70 (-1) under windy conditions on Tuesday for a two-round total of 142. The effort was good enough to best teammate Brian Adams, who shot an even-par 71, by a single stroke. Adams finished alone in second place individually in the event, while Owen Mahaffey finished tied for 13th with a two-round total of 147. Newcomer Peter Svajlen also posted a Top 20 finish for the Aggies, finishing among a group tied for 19th with a total score of 150 that included an even-par 71 in Tuesday's final round.

"That's an excellent start to our season and I'm extremely pleased with the way our team played," Hrnciar said. "They played under difficult conditions today with the wind, so that makes our score that much more impressive."

Also impressive was the manner in which the Aggies closed out the tournament. Cameron entered the final round of competition trailing first-day leader Southwestern Oklahoma State by four strokes in the team score and made the turn on Tuesday six strokes behind Abilene Christian. But rallied behind the play of Lovins and Adams.

Lovins had a three-stroke lead over Adams with three holes to play, but parred the par-5, 571-yard 17th hole before finishing with a double-bogey on the par-4, 450-yard 18th hole.  Adams, meanwhile, parred the 17th and had a chance to tie for the individual medalist title, but he parred the 18th to settle for second place.

The Aggies, though, were solid 1-4 on on Tuesday with Lovins shooting a 70, Adams a 71, Mahaffey a 75 and Svajlen a 71.  Cane Shumaker also shot 75 for the Aggies.
