Aggies in seventh at Territory Classic
DUNCAN, Okla. (Sept. 19) - Led by a trio of players who posted sub-par scores, Texas Wesleyan grabbed the first-round lead Monday at The Territory Classic, hosted by Cameron University at The Territory Golf Club near Duncan. The Rams posted an overall team score of 287 (-1) on the par-72, 7,077-yard layout, and enter Tuesday's final round with a five-stroke advantage over second place St. Edward's University.
Abilene Christian lies in third place with a team score of 298, with Southwestern Oklahoma State a single stroke back in fourth. East Central University rounds out the Top 5 with a team score of 302. Cameron's varsity squad, which posted an opening-round score of 305, is seventh.
Texas Wesleyan finished with three of the top four individual scores on Monday, led by Lance Vasquez's two-under 70. Justin Smith and Kevin Doskocil added rounds of 71 (-1), to tie for third individually after the opening round. Vasquez sits in second place behind Nick Cristea of St. Edward's, who posted a three-under 69 to lead the field.
For the host Aggies, junior Owen Mahaffey posted the low round. An honorable mention All-American last spring, Mahaffey recorded an even-par 72 on Monday to join a group of three other players tied for fifth in the individual standings. Senior Travis Lovins, who won medalist honors at last week's Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate near Abilene, Texas, shot a two-under 34 on the front nine before settling for a 76 to land in a tie for 29th. Freshman Peter Svajlen added a 78, while senior Brian Adams carded a 79. Lawton junior Chevy Ryans rounded out the Aggie scoring with an 81.
Cameron's junior varsity squad got solid rounds from Matt Trammel (74), Cane Shumaker (75) and Alex Parriott (77) and sits in ninth place in the team standings.
