Aggies rally for third at The Territory Classic
DUNCAN, Okla. -- Led by Tyler Duncan's final-round 68, the St. Edward's men's golf team overcame a five-stroke deficit to post a five-shot win on Tuesday in The Territory Classic, hosted by Cameron University at The Territory Golf Club near Duncan, Okla. Duncan's effort equalled the low round of the tournament and propelled the Hilltoppers past first-round leader Texas Wesleyan to claim the team title with a two-round total of 585. Texas Wesleyan was second at 590, while Cameron posted the low team score of the second round to vault from seventh to third with a team score of 595. Southwestern Oklahoma State finished fourth at 599 and Northeastern State rounded out the Top 5 with a team score of 605 on the 7,077-yard, par-72 layout at The Territory. Individually, Northeastern's Brian Ward claimed medalist honors, following his even-par opening round with a sizzling 69 on Tuesday to finish with a three-under total of 141. Duncan and Texas Wesleyan's Lance Vasquez shared second place with 143 totals, while Cameron teammates Travis Lovins and Owen Mahaffey finished tied for fourth at even-par 144. "I thought we came back and played really well today," Cameron head coach Jerry Hrnciar said of his team's effort. "Really, we played 27 of the 36 holes well enough to win. We just ran into trouble on the back nine yesterday and that cost us. "But I'm also really proud of the way our junior varsity team performed," Hrnciar continued. "The young guys on our team are really playing well and that is going to be a benefit to us as we continue through this season." Of the 13 teams competing in this week's event, the Cameron junior varsity squad finished tied with St. Mary's University for sixth place. For the Aggie varsity squad, Lovins once again provided the team spark. The Canadian, Texas, senior equalled Duncan's 68 on Tuesday after carding a four-over 76 in Monday's opening round. Mahaffey followed his 72 on Monday with another steady round of even par, while senior Brian Adams added a one-over 73. Chevy Ryans posted a 77 and Peter Svajlen posted an 80. Cameron's 290 team score on Tuesday was three strokes bettern than the final round score posted by St. Edward's and 13 strokes better than Texas Wesleyan. Cameron's junior varsity squad was led by Miami, Okla., sophomore Cane Shumaker, who shot a 72 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for ninth place individually. Junior Matt Trammell also finished among the individual Top 20, posting a final-round 76 to tie for 18th with a 150 (+6) total. Hrnciar's squad will have a week off before preparing for the Drury Invitational on Oct. 3-4, in Springfield, Mo.
