Aggies crown seven LSC tennis champions
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Oct. 8) - Cameron University's men's tennis team turned in a dominating performance at this week's Lone Star Conference Individual Championships.
Coach James Helvey's squad sent players to the championship match in six of nine flights - including all three doubles flights - and came away with five conference titles. Cameron's Lady Aggies also came away with a pair of individual conference titles, during action at the Midwestern State University tennis complex.
Newcomer Nicolas Mascheroni won the No. 3 men's singles title for the Aggies with a 6-3, 6-2, win over Midwestern State's Charles van Swelm, while Jordi Mullor posted a 6-4, 6-4, win over Abilene Christian's Juan Nunez in the No. 4 singles title match.
Rafael Zurita also won by a 7-6, 6-4, count in the No. 5 singles match, topping ACU's Ryan Hudson.
The Aggies also won two of three conference doubles titles. Mascheroni and Mullor teamed to defeated van Swelm and MSU teammate Jared King in the No. 2 doubles championship and Carlos Fernandez and David Detudamo turned back ACU's Hudson and Kevin Beedy in the No. 3 doubles title tilt.
For the Lady Aggies, senior Carolina Vera-Vera won the No. 1 singles flight with a 7-6, 6-2 decision over defending LSC champion and current ITA regional champ Dasha Segenchuk of East Central, while Sandra-Leigh King rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 11-9, win over Tarleton State's Melanie Zilles to win the No. 6 singles draw.
"We played great this weekend," Helvey said. "I feel like we've got the best men's team in the conference, but we're a long way from May and hopefully we'll be able to carry this over to the spring season.
"The girl that Carolina beat in the finals (Segenchuk) will be representing our region at the ITA national tournament coming up this week, so that's a huge victory for her," Helvey added. "I'm just really proud of both of my teams right now."
Cameron also came away with a pair of runner-up efforts in the conference tournament. Tim Hinst fell to ACU's George Carstens in the No. 2 men's singles finals and teamed with Zurita in the No. 1 doubles title match, falling to Carstens and teammate Casper Steenkamp.
The Lone Star Conference Individual Championships effectively wrapped up a successful fall season for the Cameron tennis teams. Both the Aggies and Lady Aggies are expected to resume action in February.
