Lady Aggies come alive, stop skid

UPDATED STATISTICS»

AMARILLO, Texas (Feb. 10) - The Cameron softball team ended a season-opening seven-game skid in aggressive fashion Friday, posting run-rule victories over Panhandle State and Regis in opening-day action at the West Texas A&M Invitational.

Cameron turned back OPSU 13-1 in five innings before disposing of Regis in six innings, 9-1. The victories improved Coach Brent Shaw's squad to 2-7 on the year.

Timely hitting was the key to both Lady Aggie victories on Friday. Cameron grabbed a 4-0 lead in the second inning against Panhandle State with a pair of RBI groundouts and a two-run single by Stephanie Bour, then broke the game open with five hits in a seven-run fourth inning.

Against Regis, the Lady Aggies struck early again, plating five runs in the top of the first that included a two-run homer by Bethany Stefinsky. Cameron had just six hits in the game, but capitalized on five Regis errors, nine walks and three hit batters.

"We just got timely hits when we needed them," Shaw said. "It was about 30 degrees out there today and the wind was blowing about 20 miles an hour, so we were real patient at the plate. But when they put runners on with walks or errors, we made them pay by hitting them in."

Cameron will continue action in the West Texas A&M Invitational with four more games over the weekend. The Lady Aggies will face Adams Sate and Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday before wrapping up the event with Sunday games against New Mexico Highlands and Mesa State.
