Softball falls in LSC First Pitch opener
IRVING, Texas (Feb. 24) - A three-run sixth inning proved to be the difference for West Texas A&M on Friday in the annual Lone Star Conference softball First Pitch Invitational. The Lady Buffs used the rally to post a 6-3 win over Cameron in one of the few games completed on a day cut short by rainfall.
Play is scheduled to resume at noon Saturday. However, the forecast for the Irving area calls for continued rain through Friday night into Saturday morning, putting much of Saturday's schedule in jeopardy.
Cameron, which dropped to 8-11 with the loss, will resume play in the event on Saturday, weather permitting.
Coach Brent Shaw's Lady Aggies grabbed the early lead against West Texas A&M, scoring once in the bottom of the first. Shelby Davis followed Megan Young's leadoff triple with an RBI single to make it 1-0 Cameron. The Lady Buffs answered with a run in the top of the second, but Cameron regained the lead in the third after and RBI single by Young.
But WTAMU evened the score in the fourth on a leadoff homer by Marci Shepherd and got another homer from Brooke Guidry in the sixth to take control. Katherine Alcala capped a three-run outburst by the Lady Buffs in the sixth with a two-RBI double.
Cameron picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. Stephanie Bour doubled down the left field line to open the frame and avanced around the basepath on a pair of Lady Buff errors. WTAMU rounded out the scoring with a Breanna Adams RBI single in the top of the seventh.
Jessica Hutton (4-7) took the loss for the Lady Aggies, despite striking out eight against just one walk. Hutton pitched her eighth complete game of the season, allowing eight hits and six earned runs over the seven innings.
