Halterman retires as Lady Aggie head coach

Dick HaltermanLAWTON, Okla. (March 3) – Cameron University women’s basketball coach Dick Halterman announced Friday he is retiring from coaching, according to school officials. Halterman’s retirement will take effect May 31, as he continues to perform special duties within the Cameron athletic department through the remainder of the 2005-06 school year. A nationwide search to fill the vacant coaching position will begin immediately.

“I appreciate Cameron University giving me the opportunity to finish my coaching career here and I appreciate everything that has been done here for me and my family,” Halterman said. “The people in this community have treated me and my wife, Betty, unbelievably well. I just feel that I no longer have the desire to get out on the road and recruit and do all the things that are necessary and it wouldn’t be fair to our women’s basketball program or to Cameron University to continue without it.

“Maybe I’ll get away from coaching for a year or two and miss it and want to get back in,” Halterman continued. “But I think for now, this is the best thing for me and my family.”

Halterman recently completed his fourth season as head coach of the Lady Aggies. His teams at Cameron compiled an overall record of 52-56 (.481), including a 15-12 mark this season. Cameron advanced to the 2004 and 2006 Lone Star Conference postseason tournaments under Halterman and climbed as high as No. 5 in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional rankings this season.

Prior to leading the Cameron program, Halterman spent 19 seasons as head women’s basketball coach at Oklahoma State University, where he guided the Cowgirls to more than 300 victories and an appearance in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division I national basketball championships. He was named the Big Eight Conference Coach of the Year twice during his tenure at OSU, in 1984 and 1991. Halterman also won a junior college national championship at Moberly (Mo.) Junior College and a high school state championship at Wheeling, Mo., where he began his coaching career in 1974.

“It has been a great pleasure to work with Dick Halterman this season,” Cameron Athletic Director Jim Jackson said. “He has done a lot for women’s basketball, not only at Cameron but in the state of Oklahoma, and we are grateful for his contributions to our program, to Cameron University and to the Lawton community. He will be missed.”

Cameron concluded the 2005-06 season on Tuesday, falling to 17th-ranked West Texas A&M in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament. Several Lady Aggie players are currently under consideration for individual postseason honors, including seniors Brittany Cooksey and Joneatta Brown, who each ranked among this year’s conference leaders in several statistical categories.

“I am disappointed to see Coach Halterman go and he will be missed,” Jackson added. “However, given the quality of the women’s basketball program that Dick has helped build here, I am excited about the opportunity to attract another quality coach to our staff. I expect there will be nationwide interest from coaches seeking to build from the solid foundation that Dick has helped establish here over the past four seasons.”
