Aggies take sixth at SoCal Intercollegiate

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. (March 7) – Sophomore Cane Shumaker fired a final-round 71 on Tuesday, leading the Cameron men’s golf team to a sixth-place showing at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championship. The Miami, Okla., native finished just two strokes out of the top 10 while landing in a tie for 17th individually with a three-round total of 223 (+13) on the par-70, 6,583-yard layout at Marabella Country Club.
Cameron, which entered the final round tied with Cal State-Chico for sixth place, posted a final-round team score of 301 on Tuesday. The Aggies finished four strokes ahead of seventh-place Valdosta State and four behind fifth-place Georgia College & State University. Sonoma State, ranked No. 16 in the latest GolfStat NCAA Division II head-to-head rankings, rallied with a final-round 292 to leapfrog second-ranked Cal State-Bakersfield for the tournament title. Individual honors went to Sonoma State’s Kyle Hopkins, who tamed the Marabella course for a one-over-par total of 211.
Shumaker was the only Cameron player to finish among the top 25 individuals. Senior Travis Lovins, who entered the final round tied for 15th on the leaderboard, had a 79 on Tuesday to finish tied for 26th with a three-round total of 227 (+17). Freshman Peter Svajlen also carded a final-round 79 and finished one stroke behind Lovins at 228. Junior Owen Mahaffey rallied with a 72 on Tuesday to climb to 35th overall at 231, while Matt Trammel posted a throw-away 81 in the final round to finish at 234.
Tuesday marked the first time this season that Coach Jerry Hrnciar’s Aggies have finished below third in a tournament this season. Cameron earned team victories at the West Texas Intercollegiate and the Oklahoma Intercollegiate during the fall portion of the schedule and finished second at the St. Mary’s Invitational in October. The Aggies will look to add to their team victory total later this month, taking part in the East Central University Oak Hills Classic on March 20-21, in Ada.
