Softball drops two to Northeastern State

UPDATED STATISTICS»

LAWTON, Okla. (March 11) - Northeastern State scored just two earned runs Saturday, but that was plenty of offense to post a double-header sweep over the Cameron softball team.

Coach Brent Shaw's Lady Aggies managed just six hits on the day and failed to score a run, dropping to 13-16 overall and 1-3 in conference play with losses of 2-0 and 3-0 to the Lady Reds.

Cameron will look to rebound on Monday, beginning a four-game series with Midwestern State in Wichita Falls. The Lady Aggies will host MSU on Tuesday at Cameron Field to complete the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

NSU got on the board with two runs in the first inning of Game 1, getting an RBI single by Candace Badger and scoring an unearned run on a Cameron fielding error to go up 2-0.

Lady Aggie starter Jessica Hutton clamped down from there, however, allowing just one hit the rest of the game while turning in her 12th complete-game effort of the year. But Aggie hitters struggled against NSU pitcher India Williamson, who struck out eight and allowed just two hits through the first five innings. Cameron had just four hits in the game and never threatened until the final inning.

After Casey Seabolt reached base for the Lady Aggies on a dropped fly ball with two outs in the seventh, Stephanie Bour ripped a shot that nearly tied the game, instead careening off the center field fence for a double that advanced Seabolt to third. After dodging the potential game-tying bullet, Williamson retired the next Cameron hitter to get the complete-game win while improving to 6-1 on the season.

Game 2 proved to be equally as frustrating for Coach Shaw and the Lady Aggies. Bethany Stefinsky tossed a complete-game three-hitter on the mound for Cameron, only to be outdone by Stevie Bailey's two-hit mound effort for the Lady Reds. Bailey struck out six with no walks and faced just three batters over the minimum in the game.

Stefinsky held the Lady Reds scoreless until the fourth, when Vanessa Cook followed Badger's sacrifice bunt with an RBI double to left-center to make it 1-0. NSU scored two more in the sixth on a Kristy Seachris two-run double to center.

Of Cameron's six hits on the day, half came from junior Shelby Davis. The Central Arizona College transfer finished 3-for-7 at the plate, including a 2-for-4 effort in Saturday's first contest.
