LAWTON, Okla. (March 25) - After handing third-ranked Abilene Christian its first no-hitter in nearly two years on Friday, the Cameron baseball team took it to the Wildcats again on Saturday. Coach Todd Holland's squad posted a doubleheader sweep, winning by scores of 5-3 and 3-2 to win the weekend series with ACU three games to one.
Saturday's wins improved the Aggies, who have won seven of their last eight, to 15-14 on the year.
Cameron pitchers Art Gonzales and Ryan Bengert combined to limit ACU to just seven hits in the opening game and L.J. Willis recorded his second complete game of the season while holding the Wildcats to five hits and just one earned run in the nightcap.
Aggie hitters, meanwhile, did their part. B.J. Cole finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and John Herbert belted his team-leading fifth homerun of the season to lead a 10-hit attack in Game 1.
Cameron got on the scoreboard first in Saturday's opener, using an RBI single in the first by Greg Patton to claim a 1-0 advantage. ACU answered with a two-run homer by Danny Williams in the second, but Herbert's solo shot to lead off the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 2-2.
Cole gave the Aggies the lead for good an inning later with a double to score Waylon Pettet. Herbert brought Cole around with an RBI single and later scored a Patton single to center field.
ACU got its final run of the game on a solo homer by Alec Sowards in the sixth, but that was one of only three hits allowed by Bengert down the stretch. Gonzales picked up the win, allowing just four hits in five innings with two strikeouts.
Willis continued Cameron's mastery over the Wildcat hitters in the nightcap, allowing just two hits after the third inning. Neither team scored after the third inning, as the Aggies rallied from two runs down to take the win.
Abilene Christian scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt McGuire in the second and made it 2-0 when Trey Watten crossed the plate following a Willis wild pitch in the third.
But the Aggies stormed back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Herbert singled in a run following an ACU error and Patton plated a run with an infield single that was deflected by ACU pitcher Chris Wiman. Herbert then scored on a wild pitch to complete the comeback.
Willis scattered five hits in the complete-game win. He struck out three and walked two. Cole and Blake Hughes each went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game for the Aggies.
Cameron will complete a six-game home stand on Wednesday. The Aggies open Lone Star Conference North Division play, hosting Northeastern State University in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., at Cameron's McCord Field.
