ADA, Okla. (April 2) - A day after torching East Central for 22 runs and 18 hits in a series-opening win, the Cameron baseball team was at it again Sunday.
Coach Todd Holland's Aggies improved to 19-15 overall and 4-1 in Lone Star Conference North Division play, tagging ECU pitchers for 14 hits in a run-rule shortened 14-3 victory over the Tigers in the rubber match of the three-game set.
Cameron will continue LSC North play on the road Wednesday, visiting Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant.
Five Aggie hitters had two hits each on Sunday, leading Cameron's assault on five ECU pitchers. The Aggies also collected a total of 12 RBI in the game while capitalizing on three Tiger errors. John Herbert and Mark Armstrong paced the Cameron offensive attack, each finishing with a pair of hits and three RBI. Jason Huffaker (1-0) earned his first pitching victory of the season for the Aggies, allowing just four hits and two earned runs in five innings of work.
Cameron built an early 9-0 lead as Huffaker allowed just one hit through the first three innings. The Aggies came out swinging in the first inning and scored three runs on six hits, including a two-run single up the middle by Armstrong. B.J. Cole doubled in a run in the second inning to make it 4-0.
Matt Machinski sparked a five-run rally in the fourth for the Aggies, leading off the frame with a double down the left field line. The Aggies registered only two other hits in the inning, including a two-run double by Herbert, but capitalized on two ECU errors in the inning to take a nine-run lead.
ECU got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Aggies quickly answered with two more in the fifth, when Greg Patton and Armstrong were hit by pitches with the bases loaded. Blake Hughes laced a two-run single in the sixth and Herbert added a sacrifice fly in the same frame to round out the Cameron scoring. ECU scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh on a passed ball.
In addition to Armstrong and Herbert, Waylon Pettet, Cole and Josh Mathiesen each recorded two hits in the contest. Six Aggies also scored at least two runs in the game, led by Cole's three trips across the plate.
In three games against East Central this weekend, Cameron totaled 40 runs and 41 hits.
