ADA, Okla. (April 4) - Cameron managed just two hits in a 2-1 loss in the opening game of a Lone Star Conference North Division doubleheader at East Central Tuesday. But Coach Brent Shaw's Lady Aggies rattled the sticks in the nightcap, jumping out to a 7-0 lead to snap a six-game losing skid with a 7-5 victory over the Tigers.
Cameron (20-26, 6-12 LSC North) will try for two more on Saturday, hosting ECU in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
ECU starter Cara Gaskins carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning of Tuesday's first contest, but a Megan Young single down the left field line to open the inning broke up the bid. Nursing a slim 1-0 lead, Gaskins worked out of the jam, however, leaving two Cameron runners on base in the frame.
The Tigers made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homer by Jayme Miller.
Cameron threatened a comeback in the sixth, with Stephanie Bour leading off the top of the inning with a double to left. Bour later advanced on a passed ball and scored on Melinda Farrow's sacrifice fly to cut the lead in half. But Gaskins, who finished the game with 11 strikeouts, retired four of the next five Lady Aggie hitters to earn the win.
Jessica Hutton (8-18) took the loss for Cameron, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits in six innings. She walked one and struck out three.
In the second game, the Lady Aggie offense woke up. Cameron plated two runs in the first on a two-run double by Farrow and went up 3-0 in the second on an RBI single by Bour.
The Lady Aggies appeared to break the game open in the fourth inning, tagging ECU pitcher Amanda Boyse for four runs on three hits. Bour's single through the right side scored two and Young plated a run on a groundout later in the frame. Bour then scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-0 Cameron.
But East Central threatened a comeback bid in the sixth. The Tigers scored five unearned runs, including a three-run homer by Miller, following a Cameron error to get within two. But Cameron pitcher Bethany Stefinsky held off the Tigers in the seventh, recording her ninth complete game of the season while improving her mound record to 12-8. Stefinsky scattered seven hits and struck out six against four walks.
Bour led the Lady Aggies at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort, including three RBI and two runs scored. Farrow and Kristina Stephens added two hits apiece as Cameron improved to 20-26 overall and 6-12 in LSC North Division play.
