Aggies continue run with SWOSU sweep

LAWTON, Okla. (April 8) - Cameron's steady run through the Lone Star Conference North baseball schedule continued Saturday.
Coach Todd Holland's squad, which has won 15 of its last 17 games, improved to 8-1 in LSC North play with a doubleheader sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State at Cameron's McCord Field. The Aggies won the first game 13-4 and took the nightcap by a 7-2 count.
John Herbert led the Aggies (23-15) at the plate Saturday, going 4-for-7 with six runs batted in. Herbert blasted a pair of homeruns in Saturday's opening contest and added a double in Game 2, improving his season batting average to .352. B.J. Cole and Greg Patton each added three hits and four RBI on the day.
Southwestern got out to a first-inning lead in the first contest, using a Tanner Dewald single to plate two runs. Cameron aswered with three runs on Herbert's RBI single and a two-run single by Patton in the bottom half of the inning.
After Southwestern tied the score on a Landon Thompson single in the second, but it was all Aggies from there. Cameron plated three more runs in the bottom of the second, including two on the first of Herbert's two homers in the game. Cameron added three more runs in the fourth to go up 9-3, then made it a seven-run game in the fifth when Matt Machinski scored from third on a SWOSU wild pitch.
Herbert launched his second homer, another two-run shot, in the Aggies' three-run sixth.
Southwestern ended a four-inning scoreless drought in the seventh off Aggie reliever Danny Lee, but starter Art Gonzales earned the easy victory with a five-hit effort over six innings. Gonzales (6-3) struck out seven and walked just one while allowing three earned runs.
The Aggies took control early in the second game, scoring three times a first inning rally that included RBI doubles by Herbert and Ryan Whiteley. Cole gave the Aggies a 5-0 lead with a two-run double in the second.
Aggie starter L.J. Willis held Southwestern scoreless untill the fifth inning. The Bulldogs got an RBI single from Thompson and a run-scoring double by Dewald to cut the lead to 5-2. But Cameron answered in the bottom half of the frame, as Whiteley belted a two-run homer to the gap in right-center.
Willis notched his fourth complete game of the season to get the win, scattering six hits. Whiteley finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a homer and three RBI.
Cameron will go for the weekend sweep against the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon, in a single nine-inning contest scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
