Aggies climb to No. 7 in South Central rankings

LAWTON, Okla. (April 11) - After a 5-0 week that concluded with a run-rule victory over Lone Star Conference North Division rival Southwestern Oklahoma State on Sunday, the Cameron University baseball team continues to garner respect in the South Central Region. Coach Todd Holland’s squad jumped three spots to No. 7 in this week’s South Central regional rankings, as released by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The Aggies debuted at No. 10 last week, marking the team’s first regional ranking since joining the NCAA Division II ranks.

The NCBWA regional poll is voted upon by a regional ranking committee consisting of sports information directors representing each conference in the region. The South Central baseball region consists of teams in the Lone Star Conference, Heartland Conference and Gulf South Conference, along with independent schools in the area.

With its complete sweep of LSC North rivals Southeastern Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma last week, Cameron has now won 16 of its last 18 games to improve to 24-15 overall this season. The Aggies lead the LSC North Division standings with a near-perfect 9-1 mark, one game ahead of defending division champion Central Oklahoma. The two teams will meet in a doubleheader Wednesday in Edmond to battle for control of the division. Cameron will continue conference road play later in the week, visiting Northeastern State for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.

Sixth-ranked Abilene Christian regained the top spot in the regional poll, unseating No. 10 Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Javelinas, who held down the top spot each of the past two weeks, dropped to second, followed by West Alabama, Delta State and Angelo State. Incarnate Word came in at No. 6 in the regional rankings, followed by Cameron at No. 7. Montevallo and St. Mary’s (Texas) shared the eighth spot, with Southern Arkansas rounding out the Top 10.
